Hat Shawl Ministry

“What one person with an idea can accomplish.”

“In the beginning…”

In early 2014 AUMC member Monika began a Crocheting and Knitting class for our youth open to both genders. As they were meeting and learning, an idea emerged to create hats for folks at local Cancer Centers who had lost their hair during Chemotherapy.

The youth liked the idea and went to work on the goal. By April, the class had created enough hats for a delivery to the Wilson Cancer Center at Baptist Beaches Hospital. As part of the delivery, a Cancer Survivor spoke to us and told us how grateful those Cancer Survivors would be for such a lovely gesture.

There was a writeup in a local newspaper about our youth and what they had done. The newsletter within Baptist Hospital featured them for their loving work. A local TV station covered what our youth had accomplished and how they served the community as Gods hands and feet.

“What next?”

The youth class ended but the need remained. What to do? A note in the AUMC bulletin and word of mouth in the church did the trick. The AUMC Hat and Prayer Shawl Ministry was born. The church community was asked to donate yarn they did not need. We were flooded. “My home runneth over.”

We started with 13 participants. Some needed to learn to crochet. Most had never done anything like this before. The effort is now part of the serving ministries in the AUMC. Since inception the Hat and Prayer Shawl Ministry has delivered over 750 hats and more than 25 Prayer Shawls.

“Today”

The group is alive and active. Now, members work mostly from their homes, gathering occasionally for fellowship, food, fun, and to share “oohs and ahhs” about their work product. The ministry has delivered to Wilson Cancer Center. Inspired by our work, their auxiliary started their own group to serve their patients. We deliver to the 21st Century Oncology a couple of times a year. Our main client organization is the Cancer Specialist of North Florida who cared for one of our members.

We love to serve and be the hands and feet of Jesus, creating with the love of God in our

Hearts. We are always looking for new members. Come join us! There is a spot for you.

If you don’t know how to Crochet or Knit we will teach you.
